Dam Overtopping
There are many outdated dams in the United States that require rehabilitation. A cost-effective, hydraulically stable and environmentally attractive method of dam upgrading is to allow overtopping and to protect the downstream face of the dam using a revegetated articulated concrete block (ACB) system. Designers of these dams must feel comfortable with the selection of block type, weight and dimensions of this type of protection system to ensure design performance. The hydraulic testing performed during the 1980's has provided performance information of various block systems under ideal conditions and has shown that ACB's can achieve a high degree of stability under high-velocity, high-stress conditions.
